Building the Empire


During the beginnings of the Roman Empire, political offices and instutions were made so that it was impossible for one man to become too powerful. The empire continued to spread its influence by using military power, bringing enslaved people as well as loot back to Rome. Another way they became a larger empire was by extending forms of citizenship to the people that occupied the land their military conquered.


Architect wise, Rome was known to have architecture like no other ancient civilization. Their buildings had to rely on a post- and-lintel system, where they used two upright posts like columns with a horizontal block known as lintel laid on top of the structures. Because of this method, the Romans designed their structures to be impressive externally. But due to how heavy the lintel blocks were, the sizes of these structures had to be limited so that the inside could handle the weight of the blocks
